Pet Food In Sachets

Everyone used to buy pet food in tins, it came with jelly which is basically congelled liquid from the cooking process.

Now pet food comes in sachets and is advertised as having jelly in it and costs almost x4 the price.

How stupid are people to fall for this.

Why are you buying this rubbish, it's just pet food.!!!!

In a tin £1.40 per kilo.

In a sachet £4.20 per kilo.

One Shot Araldite

If I need to stick something back together I always use Araldite, because it works.

So when I needed a new tube last week I bought one in Tesco, instead of the usual twin tubes, adhesive and hardener, it came in a syringe. I thought that looks a great deal easier to measure and mix.

It wasn't until I got it home and read the packet properly that I discovered that it could only be used once. After that the whole things gunges up and goes in the bin.

Quite apart from the fact that I paid £1.49 for enough glue to fix one item (because at the time that was all I needed), at a time when we are trying to be greener and use less isn't this a shameless waste of resources.

Coffee in little capsules.....why?

There's been a trend for a few years now for coffee machines to be made to accept coffee in little plastic capsules.

Why do you think some advertising guru came up with that idea??? Because once you've bought the machine you're tied into the company to buy their coffee forever.

Today a 250g bag of Douwe Egberts cost £2.93, a good cup takes approx. 12g of coffee, so for £2.93 you get 21 cups, price per cup 14p.

At Tesco Nescafe Dolce Gusto Espresso cost £3.26 for 16 capsulaes, 20p a cup, nearly 50% more.

But hey, in the future they can charge what they like!

How many blades does a razor need

I've got a Wilkinson Sword razor, it's got one blade, I've had it for years, it works perfectly.

But the marketing gurus at WS don't think that's good enough so we had the Double, then a trio...........now it's 4 blades in a quattro!!!! What on earth for?

And when will it stop, 5 blades, 6....10.

A razor with 75 blades in it that needs to be lifted by a pully system attached to the bathroom ceiling....one slip and your head ends up like a sliced loaf on the bathroom floor.

Ridiculous!!!!!!!!

Does the World Really Need Electronic Air Fresheners

More and more we are being encouraged to recycle, and that's as it should be, the more we recycle the less of the earths resources we need to use.

However at the other end of the chain there are some things which really didn't need creating in the first place, saving all the materials used to create them and all the effort needed to recycle them. Electronic air fresheners fall firmly into this category.

They are an abhorent waste of money, time and more importantly resources and is a prime example of companies creating pointless proiducts that nobody needs and then heading off down a developement avenue to try and sell this rubbish.

It started off which air freshener sprays running off batteries and spraying at regular intervals, then came plug-ins, more electricty used, then came electronic devices with multiple bottles of fragrance and now it's electronic movement detectors so it only sprays when someone is in the room. It's an arms race between fragrance manufacturers, but who buys this crap.

If you took all the money spent on developing, advertising, creating, making, selling and then disposing of these items, just think what could be achieved in helping a 3rd world country.

If your room smells bad wash whatever is the source of the smell and open the window, if that fails use can of air freshener as a last resort. I've had the same can of air freshener for over a year.

If you want to create an ambience for a special occasion use scented candles.

WHatever you do don't get trapped into this wateful cycle of pointless technology.

Author Of Wellbeing Study Speaks Out

How interesting, a recent study has shown exactly as I suspected, more money doesn't mean more happiness.

And what's interesting the analysis of this study is that our government is obsessed with money, saving it, economic growth, GDPs, etc etc, with absolutely no consideration for whether this is what people want, need or makes them happier.

If You Buy This Your Life Will Be Better

A line from a song from The Tamperer from 1998. Not their best know hit for sure, but a line that perfectly sums up this blog. You see, as I get older (and I’m 45 now) I find myself more and more irritated and annoyed by ridiculous advertising and pointless products.

But it runs far deeper than that, through the core of modern living and our society. It seems we are getting more and more obsessed with buying things. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not an eco warrior, I have car, a flat screen TV and a computer, it's just that our society seems to me to becoming increasingly preoccupied with shopping without really knowing why and not really needing what we are buying!

Let me give you an example of what I mean. When I was a child my mother would go to the supermarket and buy washing powder, she nearly always bought the same brand, Persil Automatic except maybe if she had some items that couldn’t go in the machine in which case she would buy non-automatic. And it got the clothes clean.

Now days the washing powder takes up nearly half an isle in the supermarket (and the supermarket these days are much larger). There is biological powder, non-biologic powder, liquid, concentrated liquid, tables, liquid-tabs, powder for whites, powder for coloured, powder for delicates. And that’s just the washing powder.

There are stain removers (I thought that was the point of using washing powder), whiteners, colour protectors, fabric softeners in a range of formats, colours, fragrances, fabric softeners for the tumble dryer, tables to protect your washing machine from the effects of aging….it goes on and on.

And the advertising spin used to try and get us to buy these products seems to me to get more and more ridiculous. Comfort fabric softener currently has a “flavour” called “Sunshine”. What on earth does that mean, will my clothes radiate sunshine, smell like sunshine or feel like sunshine. None of the above.

Does all the stuff work, mostly not very much. Does it matter, well Yes, actually I think it does, for two important reasons.

We all seems to be trapped in this descending vortex, working more, to earn more money so they can buy more, but why? Does money make you happy, well up to a point, yes it helps, does more money make you happier, no, I don’t think so. Spending all the hours god sends during the week working so you can spend the weekend shopping and resting in preparation for Monday and starting all over again may bring you a top of the range car, but overall is your life better for it?

And the other issue with this apparent never ending cycle is there is an end in sight, this planets resources are not infinite, the end of oil is in sight, and with other major world populations such as India and China enthusiastically throwing themselves into the vortex of consumerism surely other materials are surely soon to become endangered.

I’d like to discuss these issues further in this blog, I hope you’ll join me.
